The primary goal of ISI's immunization program is to help you prevent and reduce
your risk of flu contraction and transmission.
According to studies of healthy young adults, the flu vaccine is up to 90 percent
effective in preventing illness. Studies also show that vaccination reduces hospitalization
by 50 percent, reduces the risk of developing pneumonia by 60 percent, and reduces
the risk of dying from complications by 75 to 80 percent for high-risk groups.
What can you do? Get a flu shot each autumn. Keep up your resistance to infection
by eating a healthy diet, getting plenty of rest, and exercising regularly. Wash
your hands often and keep your hands away from your nose, eyes, and mouth.
Influenza immunizations are available to eligible HMSA members 18 years of age or
older through a variety of venues and events beginning with the annual Senior's
Fair on Oahu in September. There is no charge for the vaccine. Just bring your health
plan membership card and a photo ID. Flu shot clinics are conducted throughout the
flu season at convenient island-wide community locations.
